The 60-Second Interview -- Special Edition
CHRIS THOMAS KING
Sunday, April 24, 2005
Chris Rose
Everybody knows the blues is a Mission from God. Chris Thomas King's mission is to update the software. I mean, the blues is so Windows 2000, if you know what I mean.
A second generation bluesman from Baton Rouge (the son of the legendary Tabby Thomas), King is the brain trust behind 21st Century Blues, a cozy Uptown recording studio, record label and think tank where he is grafting the elements of modernity -- that would be hip hop, specifically -- onto the old American art form.
The result: international acclaim, a rabid fan base and even a couple of movie roles (in "Ray" and "O Brother, Where Art Thou?").
Soft-spoken but firm of thought and performance, King plays the Popeyes Blues Tent today at 4:05.

Innovative musician brings blues back to downtown Baton Rouge
CONCERT REVIEW:
Chris Thomas King
He sang the blues, rapped the blues, shouted the blues and played the blues. Chris Thomas King, that bold blues innovator and actor from Baton Rouge, came home Saturday night for a blues variety show of the kind maybe only he can do.
The second-generation blues man, son of "Rockin'" Tabby Thomas, King played the second public concert at the newly opened Manship Theatre at the Shaw Center for the Arts. Joined by a four-piece band, he opened with his rap- and hip-hop-infused 21st century blues, moved to the electric blues that came of age in the 1950s and on to acoustic Delta blues from the 1930s.

KIING PAINTS BLUES IN A WHOLE NEW WAY
June 11, 2004
BY JEFF JOHNSON Staff Reporter

Chris Thomas King's theme song could very well be Lou Christie's "Two Faces Have I."
He's a bluesman and a rapper, a musician and actor, a faithful re-creator of classic blues and a revolutionary who challenges the status quo.
He serves many masters as an entertainer, but works toward a single overriding goal: to bring the blues into the 21st century, even if it comes kicking and screaming.

21C-B-Boyz - Blues Jump Off
The Cradle of it all - mamma used to rock me there....
New Orleans is a mystical city, a world very much unto itself - eager to kick over a tradition, tread on tender feelings and open its legs to visitors and friends. And if “they got a certain way of doin’ things down there”, then it is safe to say that it is home to a lot of music, and a lot of life. There is a new generation of blues being born in ‘Nawlins, which is at the heart of the Delta. While this is certainly at the cradle of traditional blues, the 21C-B-BOYZ are a part of a new wave of music - they are a part of today.

First the Birth of the Blues, Then the Fight Over Who Owns the Baby
By BRENT STAPLES
The rap impresario Sean Combs, known as P. Diddy, had a huge hit this fall as the lead producer of the soundtrack for the movie "Bad Boys II," which included the hot party tune "Shake Ya Tailfeather." Rap fans would be surprised to know that the title dates back to the Mississippi juke joints of the early 20th century, where black field hands gathered to hear blues music after long days in the cotton fields.
Northern rap artists pride themselves on being urban sophisticates but are playing a version of the music enjoyed by black field workers in the Deep South more than 50 years ago. Stripped to its essentials, "Shake Ya Tailfeather" is a dead ringer for any number of blues tunes by Mississippians, including "Shake Your Moneymaker," by Elmore James, and "Wang Dang Doodle," by the legendary Willie Dixon.

Baton Rouge blues musicians have mixed reactions to Year of the Blues
By JOHN WIRT
jwirt@theadvocate.com
Entertainment writer
Saturday night in Baton Rouge. As usual, downtown is dark and empty. Few cars on the streets, fewer people on the sidewalks. In the stillness, though, are pockets of life. Folks are digging the blues at two music clubs sitting just three blocks apart.
Rosco Chenier is playing blues and soul for a handful of listeners in Tabby's Blues Box and Heritage Hall on Lafayette Street. The club's founder, Tabby Thomas, isn't holding court this particular night. He's playing for a full house at The Circle Bar in New Orleans. And over at Swamp Mama's on Third Street, a bigger crowd is enjoying one of Baton Rouge's world-traveling blues men, singer-guitarist Larry Garner.

I am the producer of "The Blues." Re: Tom Jacobs - He should know that the producer and the line producer of the Scorsese segment are both black. n Sunday PBS is scheduled to begin its weeklong documentary series "The Blues," with Martin Scorsese as executive producer. In the episodes, directed by Clint Eastwood, Wim Wenders, Mike Figgis and others, the past, present and future of the blues are honored, explored and explained.
But some record labels and music publishers say there is one old blues tradition being honored by PBS that would be better off left in the past: underpaying the artist.

YOUNG MANS' BLUES

Today's black rockers see such obstacles as challenges they gladly accept.
